With profiles, you can use your Netflix account with multiple people from the same family. We will explain how this works in the section below.
Share Netflix account with others
Your Netflix account can be used on an unlimited number of devices. The only limitation is that you are allowed to watch 1, 2 or 4 screens at the same time depending on the chosen plan. As a result, you can still view several people in the same family with one account. With profiles, you ensure that you do not get in each other’s way. With a profile, everyone has their own viewing history and viewing list with series and films.
Watch Netflix with multiple people at the same time
Netflix offers you three options:
- Basic: playback 1 device in SD quality
- Standard: playback on 2 devices in HD quality, plus download to 2 smartphones or tablets
- Premium: play on 4 devices in HD or Ultra HD, plus download to four smartphone or tablets
Here you will find an overview of the current bundles, with the limitations that apply.
Which bundle is most suitable for you depends on your personal situation? If you want to share your account with four students in a household, then Premium is the most suitable because there are times when everyone wants to look on their own. If you prefer to watch the entire family on TV in the living room, then Standard can suffice. Regardless of which bundle you choose: you can create multiple profiles for all of them so that you can view them all at once or in turns.
Create Netflix profile
You can create multiple profiles in the free Netflix app for iPhone and iPad. You don’t have to look at the desktop for this.
This is how you create an extra Netflix profile:
- Tap the three horizontal lines at the bottom right.
- You now see an overview of the accounts present.
- Tap Add profile to create an additional profile.
- Enter a name and change the profile image if necessary.
You can also get an overview of the available accounts via Manage Profiles, but adding an extra account works in the same way in the end.
If you want only child-friendly content to be viewed, turn on the For children switch when creating the profile.
How do Netflix profiles work?
Netflix profiles ensure that everyone can create their own viewing lists and that the viewing history is also saved per person. If your roommates love romantic movies and you like fight movies, you will only see suggestions from the fight movies you might like. You will not get to see each other’s viewing history either.
Each Netflix profile offers the following:
- Personalized suggestions for series and films
- List of recently viewed titles *
- Ratings *
- Language preference *
- Playback settings
- Age category
- My list*
The items with an asterisk are only available on adult profiles.
Netflix profiles for children
Netflix has special profiles for children. If you turn on the Switch for children in the screenshot above, the age of the child will be taken into account.
You can also make a profile child-friendly through the option Child? (Kid?) On the edit page of that profile. The Kids section of Netflix can be reached via the Netflix website, Apple TV, Apple devices with iOS 5 or higher and various game computers such as the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii.
You can set an age rating for each child profile so that children can only see movies and series that are tailored to their age. You can read more about this in our Netflix tip for children.
Netflix: profiles on multiple devices
Profiles that you create in the Netflix app on your iPhone or iPad work on all devices that support this. This way you can use the same profiles on your Apple TV, Smart TV or in your browser. There you can also manage your profiles and create new ones. Your viewing history on the iPad is also synchronized with your smart TV and other devices.
