Thriller “Rebirth” is Netflix’s original first low-budget movie totally funded by streaming service itself.
Netflix is coming with its first low budget independent original. Earlier, Netflix has thrown lot of money at movie properties to debut on its streaming service, but this time Netflix is trying something new.
Rebirth, starring dude Fran Kranz from Cabin In the Woods. Co-starring Adam Goldberg, Kat Foster, Nicky Whelan, Harry Hamlin, Andrew J. West, Sheryl Lee, Pat Healy, Eric Ladin, Luis Geardo Méndez, and Steve Agee. The movie is a creepy thriller that is about a slacker friend Goldsberg that ropes his white collar buddy (Kranz) into a questionable self-help seminar called “Rebirth.”
It directed by Karl Mueller and the dude knows cult and horror for sure as he has previously directed low-budget horror called The Devil Hands, Mr Jones , a movie about a couple who experience strange things while making a documentary in the woods.
Movie is kind of a mix between yoga, scientology and a haunted house that was shot in abandoned commercial space. There’s plenty of shadows and faux self-jargon. You have to watch the trailer if you haven’t.
As far as original programming is concerned Netflix had series like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, a solid slate of feature documentaries like The Square and Making a Murderer, and medium-budget awards bait feature films like Beasts of No Nation.
Netflix TV also introduced small indie fare. Netflix picked and acquired the best Sundance like the recent buddy drama The Fundamentals of Caring, Brahman Naman and horror flick Hush but Rebirth is different but you will only be able to watch after Netflix activate.
Netflix acquired the rights to the film in late 2015 and produced the entire thing for a relatively small $2 million budget. That kind of model is great for companies like Blumhouse Productions looking for.
Moreover, Netflix is a quantity-based model set which produces endless mini-budget movies with low overhead.Rebirth arrives on Netflix on July 15.
